Bastien Levels

 Bastien Level 1 (Beginner)

Bastien level 1 continues to teach students the valuable skills that they began in Prelude for Kids.  Starting first in the C hand position and moving through the G and F hand positions students learn to explore the keyboard further. They will also learn the meanings of countless musical terms and symbols as well as concepts such as musical form.  The studio's "Practice for Success" program teaches students proper practices habits. Flashcards are also used with the Bastien programs.

Bastien Level 2 (Beginner)

Bastien Level 2 takes the concepts learned in Bastien 1 to even greater heights slowly expanding the already well known hand positions, forms and terms.  It also teaches new keys of D and A major.  Flashcards  are also used with the Bastien programs.

Alfred's Library

Alfred's Library (Intermediate)

Alfred's Basic Piano Library can be used in many ways. It is sometimes used as an alternative to the Bastien series. More often it is used after the Bastien series for students who decide not to try the Classical route or need a little more time before starting another program.

The Alfred's Basic Piano Library uses well known songs and original compositions to further the students skills and review their current knowledge working in an easy key base. The student uses both a Lesson and Recital book. Alfred's also publishes many other supplemental books which offer the chance to play popular and movie music as well.

Alfred's Adult

Alfred's Adult Program (Beginner)

The Alfred's Adult program is used with adults and occasionally with beginners over the age of 12.

Alfred's Adult uses a left hand chord based approach with right hand melody to teach the older learner.  Upon completion of the first book students are able to play comfortably in 3-5 basic keys.  Alfred's Adult also has several supplemental books with many different styles of music that allow you to try new music while continuing to work in keys that are familiar.

We understand that finding the time to practice can be challenging for the adult learner.  We are patient with this and understand that its a heart's desire to learn to play the piano.  We encourage and work with the student every step of the journey.

RCM Perspectives

Royal Conservatory Music (RCM) Piano or Vocal Program (Intermediate - Advanced)

A graded program with emphasis on classical playing and singing technique and repertoire, systematic development of good musicianship, and performance examinations.

Recommended for anyone wishing to pursue singing or piano performance at the university level

RCM Perspectives allows the student to explore the many different types of classical music that have shaped history. There is an Introductory level and 10 grade levels with a repertoire book and study book. The repertoire book is comprised of pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century periods. The study book also contains pieces from these periods but are generally chosen because they they teach a specific technique that is important for that grade level. Students generally play 3-4 pieces from each list and 3-4 studies. Students also learn scales and other technical requirements that are specific to their grade level. At the higher levels Hanon finger exercises are employed to strengthen the fingers, increase speed and flow, and achieve balance between the hands.

The Royal Conservatroy of Music offers examinations in each grade level as well as theory examinations. These examinations are a wonderful learning experience for both students and teachers but are optional. At Andrea's Music Studio the students have two exam choices, RCM examinations in Halifax or Acadia Examinations at the studio. These exams are normally taken in the spring but can be taken through RCM in the summer and winter as well. All students taking an examination receive ear-training and sight reading instruction throughout the year.

Students who are playing the RCM repertoire can easily add in contemporary pieces as well. Teachers will work with the student to find the right balance between the Classical and Contemporary pieces.

Connections

Christopher Norton Connections (Intermediate - Advanced)

The Christopher Norton Connections Program is a brand new program that is getting great reviews from students and teachers.

There are 8 graded levels that roughly coincide with the Royal Conservatory of Music grade levels. The pieces are all written by Christopher Norton and are based on popular styles of music, Latin, Swing, Character and Lyrical. The Connections program can be used on it's own or can go hand in hand with the RCM graded music to add a little fun on the side.  Students enjoy the up beat and fun approach that the songs employ.

The program also introduces the use of technology as there are back up band tracks available online to students. They can download them and they play along with the tracks and be part of the band!
