Halifax: 6065 Cunard Street

Andrea or your teacher will let parents know what books are needed 3-4 weeks before they will be needed in the lesson.

What can I expect when I arrive for my first lesson?

When you arrive at the studio, you will wait in the waiting room as your teacher will be teaching or preparing for class.  At your appointed lesson time, your teacher will come to the waiting room and introduce her/himself.  You will be given a registration and policies form to read and sign.  Your teacher will collect post dated cheques (if applicable) and begin the lesson.

What do I need to bring to my first lesson?

Other than post dated cheques (if applicable), you will need a three ring binder for homework and supplemental sheets and your instrument if you play guitar or ukulele.  Any books and flashcards received at the lesson should be brought back each week.

How often will I need to practice?

We recommend that beginners get 15-20 minutes of practice 5 times a week.  This may increase over time as you progress to higher levels.  The other option, especially for the younger student, is a designated number of times for each practiced item (this will take 10-15 minutes each practice day).  We understand that some students will be learning how to practice and will also be working on their musical attention span so practice times will vary by individual.

Do I need an instrument to take lessons?

Yes, the students will need an instrument at home for regular practice and to prepare for the next lesson.  We have guitar and keyboard rentals available for new beginners.

How long does it take to learn to play an instrument?

This varies depending on student interest and practice amount.

Can my child prepare for Royal Conservatory Examinations?

We offer all levels of RCM lessons including the co-requisite theory.

Should a student start on an acoustic or electric guitar?

Both are taught the same way at the beginning.  It is important to select the instrument of interest.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

All lessons (including storm cancelled lessons by the studio) are to be paid for regardless of attendance.

No lesson credit will be given for classes cancelled by the student.

A make up lesson MAY occur IF another cancellation occurs within the teachers teaching schedule and within one week of the original cancelled class before the student's next lesson.

If there is a longer interuption of lessons (example: extended vacation) a $30.00 fee will be charged to recommence lessons.

What if the weather is bad?

If the studio closes because the weather is bad, your teacher will contact you using your preferred method of contact from your registration form.

However as messages can be missed or overlooked at times, if you are not sure of a closure, we recommend that you call the studio BEFORE leaving for your lesson.  The answering machine message will state if there is a studio closure. You can also check our Facebook page or our website.

If the weather is bad and the studio closes, all lessons missed are made up at our annual storm make up day held in April.  These are group classes.  The date for 2017 is Sunday April 9th, 2017.

If the studio is open but you choose to remain home, your name will be added to the storm make up day lists.

What if my teacher cancels?

If your teacher cancels a lesson, you will receive a lesson credit on your account* OR the teacher may have the option for the student to make up the lesson at a time convenient for both teacher and student.

The studio may choose to have a qualified substitute teacher to teach their lessons in the event the regular teacher is unable to do so.

All lesson credits will be balanced for June, or at your last month of lessons.

What if my lesson falls on a holiday?

The studios are closed for Christmas Break, March Break and Good Friday.

The studios are open on the other holidays, however on some holidays it is up to teacher to decide if they will teach.  Please see the list below of optional holidays. If your teacher chooses to teach and you choose to attend, these lessons must be paid for (regardless of attendance). If you choose in advance not to attend, then no payment is due.

Optional holidays are Thanksgiving Monday, Heritage Day, Easter Monday and Victoria Day.  Please note that these are the day only, not the full weekend.

Remembrance Day: The studios will be open for classes as usual after 2pm when it falls on a weekday.  When it falls on a Saturday, while still open there may be closures or recheduling to accomodate those who wish to attend a ceremony.

I do not wish to continue lessons. What happens now?

Lessons are contracted on a monthly basis.  If you quit mid month you will not be reimbursed for the rest of the month.  If you decide to quit, please let Andrea or your teacher know.
