Piano Programs

Before moving into the Bastien Piano Library course, beginners start out with the Prelude for Kids or Piano Fun Theory Fun programs. These two programs were custom designed with the young piano learner in mind by Andrea Smith herself.

In addition, each teacher is trained to help the parent and student with practice routines, styles, and other practice elements that are necessary to make learning to play the piano a success.

Advanced students will either move through the Alfred's Basic Piano course or through the Royal Conservatory of Music program. The latter program allows the students to study many different eras of music and work towards Practical Piano Examinations. Students of Andrea's Music Studio have the choice of being examined by the Royal Conservatory of Music in Halifax and by Acadia University at the studio. All students taking an examination receive ear-training and sight reading instruction throughout the year. Four weeks prior to the examination, students participate in extra ear-training classes. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Kiwanis Music Festival each spring. Andrea's Music Studio also offers books from their lending library to supplement regular curriculum. Students can borrow books with modern, jazz, blues, folk, and traditional music. Adults begin with the Alfred's Adult program which is specifically designed for the adult learner. We also offer piano instruction in Blues, Jazz and Improv using a system used by professional musicians throughout the world. This system based on scale theory can be applied to Rock, Pop, R&B, Country, Jazz and Blues. With a few simple tricks you can learn how to improvise and "jazz up" a tune.

Theory, History, Harmony

Theory is included as part of each students piano lesson. All students have the opportunity to complete Theory, History and Harmony exams through the Royal Conservatory of Music. History and Harmony courses require extra study and lesson time.

Guitar Programs

We offer guitar lessons for all age groups.

Starting with basic chords and strumming patterns with simple songs, students will soon move on to fingerpicking, power and bar chords learning more advanced music.

Your teacher will work toward the style you, the student want to play.

They will teach the skills necessary and progress toward your playing genre and goals.

Music Maker Programs

Andrea's Music Studio also offers a Daycare and Pre-School Musical Experiences program. Pre-school piano lessons are also available at the studio or through many Daycare Centres throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality.

We also offer weekly family drop ins for children from birth to 5 years at both the Dartmouth and Sackville studios. Please click on the Programs menu to find Family Music Makers and our drop in schedule!

Vocal Programs

Young singers start out learning good vocal habits, matching pitches and learning to read music notation.  They will learn to expand their singing range as they sing a variety of music from popular to musical theatre.  Teen and adult students will learn to express emotion through their music and try out vocal improvisation.  They will also learn how to perform in public and sing with a microphone.  A typical lesson begins with vocal exercises and ends working with songs from any genre, Jazz, Popular, Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical.  Students can also participate in the Royal Conservatory of Music Vocal Program which offers exams to test the students skills at graded levels.

Percussion Programs

We offer drum lessons for all levels and ages on our electric drum kits.  Students start off right away learning basic rhythms, rudiments and standard drum beats on the drum kit.  As they progress they will learn more complicated rhythms and rudiments.  We will accommodate any requests and tailor the program to meet the needs of each student.

Ukulele Programs

Ukulele is a great instrument!  Come in today to learn the basics of this great compact and portable instrument!  A good choice for young children who would like to one day play guitar.

Musical Discoveries

Musical Discoveries is a great program for groups with after school programs or organized groups like Sparks, Beavers, Brownies or Cubs.  Students learn various aspects of music from notation, ensemble playing, musical instruments from around the world and composers.  To learn more click here or contact Andrea at 469-7193 (press 2 when prompted) .
